The Garden Room
Amstelveen, 2005
Commissioned by Amstelland Hospital in Amstelveen, Fortuyn developed a new design for the quiet room and the adjacent patio garden of the hospital as a place for rest, reflection and inspiration.
The walls of the quiet room are covered with cotton and linen wallpaper, on which paint and animal motifs from different countries and cultures are woven. The embroidered motifs are reflected in the seating furniture consisting of two equal, straight chairs, a large chair with an ottoman and a rocking chair.
The courtyard garden was designed to ensure its blooming year-round. The ground is covered with pebbles cast in concrete, from which three islands rise. Collectively, the islands represent the four meteorological seasons. Wires are stretched in front of the patio’s facades and are entwined by climbing plants. Bronze knots are placed in the grit and only become visible when the climbers lose their leaves.
