Dutch Masters
2014
Dutch Masters in the 21st century is a portrayal of a series of current leading Dutch artists in their workspaces, seen through the eyes of renowned filmmakers. This look behind the scenes offers insight into the artist’s methods, use of materials and ideas about art.
The studio portraits are not strictly informative mini-documentaries, but should rather be understood as snapshots. Rather than an overview of the artists’ oeuvres, the workplace, and what is going on there at the moment of shooting, serves as the starting point for the fifteen-minute films.
After seeing these portraits, the artists and their works becomes more accessible. The project has grown into an extensive series in which many artists have been recorded. The makers aim to create a historical document on Dutch visual arts at the beginnen of the 21st century, which, in a hundred years’ time, will still be consulted.
